She'd been crying. She looked up at him with wide, wet, irritated eyes.

She cried quite a lot. And sometimes he tired of comforting her. But he knew the smile she had afterwards was usually worth whatever it took to calm her.

He punched 'play' on the CD player, singing along softly. "Don't keep me hanging on a string, tell me what I feel is no big thing... don't turn away, I'm listening; over and over again..."

She yawned softly. It was sort of amusing that someone of her young age was so enthralled with, of all people, Stevie Nicks... but she loved the song. Or maybe she just loved him singing it to her.

Either way, she was entranced. Her eyes began drooping almost as soon as he began. He laughed a bit to himself, but kept singing. "It's not important to wonder why, what is just is, no more to imply..." He shifted his arms to hold her closer to his chest. "This simple thought repeating, over and over again..."

She fidgeted a little as he continued. "Every day I see you, and every day I need you... every way I breathe you... on, and on, and on, and on, again..."

He rocked her gently, brushing his fingers gently over her hair, humming along with the guitar accompaniment. She sighed quietly, her eyes finally closing entirely. He shifted her in his arms, leaning his head over to sing quietly in her ear.

"Imagine all the ways to cope... I close my eyes, that gives me hope... it cures the silence..."

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her smile. In that moment, the entire late night serenade was worth the trouble.

His voice quieted as he finished the song. "Every day I see you... every day I need you... every way I breathe you... on and on and on and on..."

She moved her hand to grasp his gently, and his smile widened. "On and on and on and on again... again." He kissed her gently on the forehead as he turned off the CD player. "Night night, sweet thing..." Joey laid his daughter gently in her bed and turned off the light.
